On guard


In May of 1945, Quartermaster 2nd Class R.H. Swickard operates a searchlight aboard the U.S.S. Sand Lance while on war patrol. The diesel-powered submarine was built in Portsmouth Navy Yard in Maine and launched and commissioned in 1943. The Sand Lance earned five battle stars and one Presidential Unit Citation for service during World War II.
