ca. 1914-1918

During World War I, Germany used Unterseeboots, or U-boats, to sink enemy ships, including civilian merchant ships transporting supplies — and possibly weapons. The U-boats were very effective and sank Allied ships on a regular basis. During the war, Germany built nearly 400 U-boats and lost only 178. The one shown here was captured by the Allies on an unknown date.
