“For God’s sake send some Ice to these suffering men.”

8/13/1863

When faced with disease accompanied by a fever, Civil War doctors could do little but make patients as comfortable as possible. Ice helped hold down fever and quench parched mouths. The United States Christian Commission—a nationwide voluntary organization that raised money, supplies, and food for the relief of Union soldiers—circulated this appeal for money to “comfort these men.”
