“The National flag was publicly disgraced . . .”

5/4/1864

In this special order the local Union commander describes the insult that anti-Union members recently inflicted on the U.S. flag displayed behind the pulpit of a church in New Harmony, Missouri. The commander threatened to close the church and arrest its parishioners if they did not restore the American flag to its honored place.
