Sergeant in the New Jersey Militia
Jespar Vliet was a sergeant in the Hunterdon County (New Jersey) Militia during the Revolutionary War. He served at Paulus Hook and saw action at Staten Island and Paramus. After his discharge, he was a “wagoneer,” or wagon driver, between Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and Newburgh, New York. His wife, Mary, submitted this fraktur to support her claim for a Federal pension. She received $20 a month for Jespar’s service.
