Uncompensated service

Noted fraktur artist Frederich Krebs created this record of Revolutionary War veteran Ebenezer Sumner’s birth and baptism. Sumner served one year as a private in the army, five months aboard the privateer Blaze Castle, and five months as a prisoner. Sumner submitted this fraktur to prove his age in support of his claim for a pension based upon his military service. He received a pension for his army service, but since the ship was a privately owned man-of-war, he did not qualify for a larger pension.
