Petitioning to vote
1965
On March 6, 1965, police attacked a peaceful march for voting rights in Selma, Alabama. Sixty African Americans were hospitalized. On March 15 President Johnson called for a new Federal law protecting voters in the South.These African Americans petitioned the Congress to further guarantee their right to vote in the South.
