Rescue by C-123 transport plane

1968

On May 12, 1968, Lieutenant Colonel Joe M. Jackson landed his C-123 transport plane on the debris-filled runway at Kham Duc in the Republic of Vietnam. Three members of a Combat Control Team had been trapped on the airfield, which was overrun by enemy troops. Jackson landed under enemy fire to rescue the surrounded men. This is the only known image of the runway at the time of the events that earned LTC Jackson a Medal of Honor.
