President Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles
This photograph of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles was taken on August 3, 1956. Speaking at the Oval Office in the White House, the two discussed the worsening Suez Canal Crisis. The day before, the British had mobilized their military. The crisis began on July 26, 1956, when Egypt nationalized the British- and French-owned Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez (the Suez Canal Company).
