The Confederacy Goes to War!

1861

The Confederacy considered itself the victim of Northern aggression. Its efforts to negotiate separation had failed. So on May 6, 1861, the Confederate Congress passed this resolution. It amounted to a declaration of war against the United States. The U.S. Congress did not pass a similar declaration. Such an act would legitimize the Confederacy as a nation.
