Photograph of the U.S.S. Maddox

This photograph was taken in May 1964, as the U.S.S. Maddox sailed into Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Maddox served during World War II and the Korean War before she was involved in an incident in Gulf of Tonkin off the North Vietnamese coast in early August 1964. After this incident, the United States Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, deepening U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.
